The safety data sheet is the most important instrument of communication along the supply chain in terms of product safety. It should inform your customers, in an accessible and easy-to-understand way, about the most important safety measures needed to offset the potential hazards to human health and the environment that could arise in connection with the use of your products.
The formal requirements regarding the SDS are described in Article 31 and Annex II of the REACH Regulation (EG) 1907/2006 and its revisions (e.g. Directive (EU) 453/2010). Switzerland adopted these requirements (4th revision of the ChemV) and added further regional features.
Once ECHA has registered a substance and granted it a registration number, a manufacturer of dangerous goods (≥ 10 t/a) is obliged to create an extended SDS (eSDS) and to make this available to downstream users. An eSDS comprises a REACH-compatible SDS with 16 sections and an additional annex in which so-called exposure scenarios must be described for all registered uses. If there is a requirement for a Chemical Safety Report in accordance with Articles 14 or 37, then the exposure scenarios described in the annex to the eSDS must correspond to the details of the identified uses and the proven risk-mitigating exposure scenarios covered by the Chemical Safety Report, as well as the details in Section 8 of the SDS.
The entry into force on the 1st December 2010 of the CLP Regulation (EG) No. 1272/2008 for substances and mixtures, and the new format and content requirements for SDSs, represent a considerable increase in the requirements relating to product safety. This constitutes a significant challenge both to the chemical industry, and to each individual link in the chemicals supply chain (downstream users).
Staff at knoell benefit from many years of collective experience in the area of product safety, as well as in the preparation of SDSs in various EHS systems (e.g. SAP, SoCaL). If required, we can support you to produce the SDSs you need directly from your own EHS System, and provide help relating to the eSDS. However, we are also able to create REACH- and CLP-compatible SDSs in our own, in-house EHS System.
