The toxicological relevance of an agrochemical is one of the considerations during the evaluation process leading to the registration of a pesticide. A series of studies and assessments is performed in order to meet requirements in the areas of, among others, acute and chronic toxicity, genotoxicity, carcinogenicity, reproduction toxicity, neurotoxicity and toxicokinetics.
Regulation 1107/2009 has presented new aspects and challenges for the toxicological part of the registration process: the new hazard-based exclusion criteria, comparative risk assessment and the classification of active substances as „candidates for substitution“ will lead to extensive discussions with national and EU authorities. This will also apply to the area of REACh. Co-formulants and synergists must be considered particularly carefully.
